On-Going/Special Events

Stories of St. John's - If you would like to read about how the congregation of St. John's is loving God, loving people, changing lives, and being changed, then please visit the new "Stories of St. John's" Page. Currently, you can read Wayne Shirley's report on the St. John's Annual Lenten Fish Fry Dinners.

St. John's E-Mail Newsletter: Disciple Connections - In addition to the Weekend Disciple, which is published each Sunday, St. John's also sends out an e-mail version of their newsletter — Disciple Connections — twice a month, along with the occasional special announcements (such as death/funeral notifications). If you would like to start receiving this publication, please send your e-mail address with a request to be added to the mailing list to Chris Cockrell (c2cockrell@stjohns-abq.org).

Prayer Chain - Several years ago, the Women's Ministry formed an email prayer chain. At this time, there are 60+ prayer warriors from St. John's, including our ministerial staff. This prayer group welcomes your requests. One important requirement—if the prayer request is for someone other than yourself, you must have that person's permission. We must respect their privacy, just as we keep the request confidential. Requests may be sent to mapalook@comcast.net or telephoned to 768-7013.

Congo Mission Trip - John Schwarting, St. John's Executive Director, is scheduled to go on a trip to the Congo (DRC) in September and would like to invite anyone interested to join him! They will be leaving on September 13th and returning September 28th. After arriving in Lubumbwashi, they will fly on a small plane to Kapanga, where the water project is located. The cost of the trip is $5,000, which includes all airfare and expenses after leaving the US. Please contact John at the church office (505-883-9717 [ext. 121]) or on his cell phone (915-276-9913) soon if you would like to know more. This can be a life-changing experience!

New United Methodist Handbook - A new United Methodist Handbook is now available in an easy-to-read and share digital format. The Handbook is among the best resources for laity providing leadership, people new to The United Methodist Church, and clergy who occasionally get stumped by a question. You can view the New United Methodist Handbook Here.

Events Happening This Week
(July 21 - July 27):

Ladies Book Club - The Ladies Book Club will meet on Monday, July 21st, at 7:00 PM in the library (Room 231). Please note that this is a new location for this month. We will be discussing "The Language of Flowers," by Vanessa Diffenbaugh. A young lady living on the street uses her love of flowers and the knowledge of each flower's symbolism to make a new life. If you love to read, please come join us. Ladies, a reminder – this is our annual book exchange; time to clean off the shelves! What books don't find a new home are donated to the UMW Rummage Sale.

Asbury Cafe Notes - Pie parties will be held every Tuesday during the rest of July and August. Come to the church kitchen at 8:30 AM and help make the pies that will be sold during the State Fair in September. We also need freezer space to store these pies. Please call Doris Bowen (299-6570) if you can spare space in your freezer until the fair.

Countdown to Rummage Sale: July 26th - As you continue accumulating and pricing your donations for the UMW Rummage Sale, please note the following donation drop-off times:
Thursday, July 24th, from 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM;
Friday, July 25th, from 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM.
If you have furniture to donate, but are unable to deliver it to the church, please contact Mary Beth Spletzer (508-4829); we will provide furniture pick-up on a limited basis. Any other questions about the sale can also be directed to Mary Beth or to Doris Bowen (299-6570). Please invite your neighbors and friends to the sale, which opens at 7:30 AM on Saturday, July 26th! Thanks for your support of our UMW missions-giving efforts!

Beginner's Zumba Class - The Beginner's Zumba Class will be held every Thursday evening, from 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM, in the Family Life Center. No experience is required! Come get fit the fun way! Contact Trisha O'Keefe (abideabq@gmail.com) for more information.

Thursday Evening Musicales - Please join us for great music, performed by some of New Mexico's finest musicians, up close and personal! Thursday Evening Musicales will be presented July 24 and 31 at 7:30 PM in the Choir Room. Tickets ($20 for adults and $10 for students) are available on the Thursday Evening Musicales Website. All proceeds will benefit Albuquerque Healthcare for the Homeless. Please bring donations of sunscreen and socks for ABQHCH clients.

Omelet Bar - Don't forget, the 4th Sunday of every month is Omelet Bar Sunday. Come by the SonShine Café any time between 7:45 AM and 12:30 PM for your made-to-order omelet. Choose your ingredients from more than a dozen choice meats, cheeses, vegetables, and herbs, and we will make you a 2 or 3 whole egg or egg white omelet for the low price of $4.

Sanctuary Renovations: Worship Changes - During the summer, the sanctuary will be closed for construction. During the renovation, the Sunday worship services will be a little different. If you have any questions about these changes, please feel free to contact St. John's by either calling the church office (883-9717) or by sending an e-mail to admin@stjohns-abq.org.
