Memory Cafe is for all those with Alzheimer’s and their care partners.
The Memory Cafe of St. John’s in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is a cafe-styled outreach which provides individuals with memory loss AND their care partners a safe, supportive, and engaging place to interact with peers as they come together for fun and fellowship. Memory Cafe Albuquerque was started by St. John’s United Methodist Church in response to the growing population of persons with memory loss & Alzheimer’s and the dementia care culture.
“For the person journeying into dementia, the fear of no longer being enjoyable to others is added to the fear of no longer being useful.” At the Memory Cafe, both caregiver and loved one can simply relax and enjoy the company of others without the stigma that accompanies dementia.
The Memory Cafe celebrates the person beyond the dementia, with a focus on their wishes, joys, and pleasures. Memory Cafe Albuquerque is a chance for everyone to step out of their daily roles and share a positive experience in a supportive environment.
Memory Cafe Albuquerque meets on the 2nd Saturday of each month, from 3:30 PM until 5:00 PM in the St. John’s UMC SonShine Cafe – offering refreshments, social interaction, information, music, and an occasional speaker. Activities routinely include give back/pay forward activities that reach into the community.
No reservations are required and there is no fee, although donations are kindly accepted. Memory Cafe Albuquerque is facilitated by a core group of volunteers with support from various musicians and church staff.
The address of St. John’s United Methodist Church is 2626 Arizona St. NE – one block North of the Coronado Shopping Center and one block East of San Pedro. The entrance to the Memory Cafe Albuquerque is located near the parking lot on the NE side of the property, accessed from Phoenix Ave. NE (around the block). It is located in the center of the church facility from the larger church parking lot(between the Sanctuary and the Family Life Center, with floor-to-ceiling glass windows facing the parking lot).
Memory Cafes, such as Memory Cafe Albuquerque, have been established in the UK since 1997, and are just gaining momentum here in the US. There has been one in Santa Fe for several years. Dementia is a disease that affects the entire family, so we encourage and support both the care partner and the loved one together at Memory Cafe Albuquerque. We are one of 400 Memory Cafes now operating in the United States.
