Josh's Jottings: A Back-to-School Reflection

This is one of my favorite times of year, particularly with a tradition that has seen a twist in the information age. I love logging onto social media in early to mid-August to see all the back-to-school pictures from families I know; kids standing on their front door in fresh new clothes, a new backpack, and a sign or poster inscribed with their name and the grade they start this year.

John Wesley, who spearheaded the Methodist movement, placed a significant emphasis on education. He was as much a scholar as he was a religious leader and believed that education was an integral part of a fully formed spirituality. Wesley's approach to learning demonstrated that the pursuit of knowledge helps us better understand God, the world, and our place in it.

In the Wesleyan tradition, we continue to lift up education as an instrument of God's work in our lives. We are a tradition that rejects the idea that you must check your brain at the door when you walk into church. Quite the opposite, Methodists founded over 120 colleges and universities in the United States. We are a reflection of Wesley's commitment to lifelong learning and understanding that our education is not just for personal enrichment, but for the glory of God and the betterment of society.

So happy first day of school to all our students. Go out and learn and study rigorously. We are here to support your pursuit of knowledge and growth this year!
